De amore silvestri

Embark with us on a journey through the pages of Latin bucolic verse, where forest thickets inhabited by nymphs, satyrs, fauns, and gods form the backdrop for vivid tales of blissful love and ruinous passion. Over the course of five sessions, we will explore a variety of love stories: from Ovid’s fleeing nymphs pursued by the ardent Apollo, to lovers transformed into trees, and on to the hopeful romance of the young shepherds Galla and Faustus. We will trace narratives of fiery desire and chilling disdain, of longing and shame, of jealousy and fear – each leading to extraordinary transformations of soul and body. Every class will offer not just close reading and discussion of the Latin texts themselves, but also hands-on practice with the specialized vocabulary of myth and pastoral life.

I class: Primus amor Phoebi (Metamorphoses, Ovid)
II class: The Love of Daphnis (Eclogae, Naldius Naldus)
